How do you define “Aging in Place”?

For many people aging in place means the ability to remain living in their own home as long, and as independently, as possible.

How is successful aging in place accomplished?

Well, that is a long discussion that will require many, many blog posts, but you’ve come to the right place if you are starting to explore this topic and are seeking some answers.

Exercise and Education

Successful Aging in Place - Education and Exercise

Attune believes that the foundation that supports successful aging in place is exercise and education. Let’s start with the topic of exercise.

It has been well researched and documented that regular exercise is essential to keep our bodies strong. This in turn allows us to have the energy and endurance we need to make it through our day-to-day tasks and routines.

Regular exercise also helps to prevent and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and dementia.  In short, exercise allows our body to function at its best and maximize our mobility and independence.  And so, we begin to see how regular exercise supports the ultimate goal of aging in place.

Education is Knowledge

Education is also a necessary component of aging in place. Education is knowledge and with knowledge you are empowered to make informed decisions about your anticipated needs and future plans.

When you or a family member is in the middle of a health crisis and plans for discharge from hospital back to home are fast approaching, it can be very difficult to make decisions under the stress and pressure of the situation.  Having some background knowledge would be very helpful as you interact with health professionals and navigate through the health care system.

Start Planning Now

Alternatively, in the absence of any illness, you may find it extremely helpful to become educated about aging in place strategies before, for example, embarking on a major home renovation.

This information will help you plan and prepare for potential life changes that no one really welcomes or anticipates.  But having a well thought-out plan will serve you well in the future and support your desire to remain living in your home as long as possible.

A Journey We All Face

Aging in place is a process and a journey.  It does not happen overnight.  It can definitely be managed well though the fundamental principles of exercise and education which provide the necessary foundation required for moving forward.

Attune looks forward to being part of that journey with you and we would like to know what’s on your mind.  Please email us any questions you might have, or comment below.  We will address the topics raised based on your comments and provide input in future blog posts!
